I’m pretty sure we have all had those moments in life where, we make a certain decision, and upon going through with that decision, we immediately regret it. And it’s not even like a short little “uh-oh spaghettios” moment either, it is one that will have you stuck in a situation that you just can’t get out of for hours, or what feels like days. Throughout the whole thing, you feel completely miserable, with the only though that could possibly occupy your mind at that moment is how horrible everything is right now, and you just wish you could just end the pain as soon as possible. It’s happened to all of us at some point in our lives, and as for me, I have had many, MANY, moments like this, and my most recent moment of this would be when I decided that I wanted to play Bart Simpson’s Escape from Camp Deadly for this website. This is why I shouldn’t be allowed to make my own decisions in life.

I don’t think I need to stress anymore how much The Simpsons games have sucked at this point, do I? The arcade game was pretty good, but it has just been a downward spiral ever since that I know will get better, but that ending just doesn’t seem to be in sight anywhere. I especially didn’t find that ending when I decided to check out this game, the very first Simpsons game to be released exclusively for the Game Boy rather than on a console. So after I played it, I can say, without a shred of doubt in my mind, that this is the absolute worst Simpsons game so far, and one of the worst Game Boy games I have ever played in my life. There is no positive spin that I can put on it, it is that bad, and through my entire time trying to slog through it, I could feel nothing but despair and sorrow.

The story is basic enough, where Bart and Lisa get stuck at the Camp Deadly run by Mr. Burns, because of course it is, and they have to find a way to escape with their lives, which is also pretty close to the episode of the show known as Kamp Krusty, even if that was released a whole year after this game, the graphics are Game Boy graphics, and not just any ol’ Game Boy graphics, but what looks like the sprites from the NES games squished and shrunken down for this handheld, and it looks pretty terrible and terrifying at the same time, the music is, you guessed it, JUST ONE FUCKING TRACK, which is of course The Simpsons theme, and it sounds even worse on the Game Boy then on the NES, the control is about as enjoyable to handle as a bee hive while a million bees are stinging me all over my body, and the gameplay is the most basic out of all the games so far, but that doesn’t make it any better.

The game is a 2D platformer, where you take control of Bart Simpson, go through six levels of utter hell, jump over, dodge, and defeat any enemy you can with either your own spit wads or whatever powerups that you can find throughout the levels, run into Lisa on multiple occasions, where she will give you plenty of items to help you out on your journey, such as boomerangs to attack enemies, and temporary suits that will allow you to bypass certain hazards, like bees or just regular enemies, and sometimes fight a boss…….. and by sometimes, I only mean one boss. There is only one boss, it is Nelson, and he can be defeated very easily. Aside from all that, along with a few cutscenes and collectible items here or there, that is pretty much the entire game.

Like with Return of the Sinister Six, just the simple act of playing this game is incredibly painful, as given that it is a Simpsons game for the Game Boy, it controls pretty terribly, is very slow, and it is way harder then it needs to be. There are enemies that show up everywhere all the time, and given how your hitbox is so huge, and the fact that the screen is so small, you are bound to get hit by any and all things that come your way, unless you know they are coming beforehand, or you have the reflexes of a god. There aren’t even that many platforming challenges, unless you count the jumping to be a challenge on its own, because for the most part, you will just be walking from left to right, defeating enemies, grabbing an item here or there, and then moving on. Given how the game controls, as well as the frame rate that it runs at, it is much harder to do then it sounds, and it makes you wanna stop playing it from the moment you start it up.

And you know what? I don’t wanna play it anymore. Hell, I don’t even wanna talk about it anymore. So you know what, for the rest of this review, I am gonna go ahead and watch and review Kamp Krusty instead, because that will be much more enjoyable than this!

Wow, I actually forgot how great The Simpsons used to be. I am more familiar with how the show is nowadays, where the animation may be at its best, but the episodes themselves are usually pretty middling, which makes sense given how long the show has been going, but it is still kinda sad to see. In terms of this episode, I hadn’t watched it in years, but I do remember really liking it at the time, and considering it to be one of the best the show had to offer at that point. Now that I have rewatched it, it still holds up extremely well. The voice acting is incredible, the animation, while not the best, still looks pretty good for the show at that point in 1992, the plot is simple but ends on a pretty crazy and hilarious note, and speaking of hilarious, the humor is fantastic. There were points in the episode where I was laughing pretty hard, and I don’t usually laugh that hard when I watch many other adult animated sitcoms like this. I think it all comes down to the writing, which in terms of this point in the show, is absolutely masterful, and would continue to be masterful from Season 4 to Season 6, with those three seasons being my favorites of the show.

But wait a minute… wasn’t I talking about a game at some point? Oh yeah, I was. Well, to get back to that, FUCK THAT GAME. It is easily the worst Simpsons game I have ever played so far, and one of the worst Game Boy games, let alone games in general, I have ever played. It has absolutely no redeeming qualities to it whatsoever, and it only serves to be a piece of merchandise that deserves to be thrown straight into the pit of garbage where it came from. I don’t recommend anyone playing it, whether it be Simpsons fans or Game Boy fans, because you will immediately regret doing so if you try it. Just go watch Kamp Krusty instead. Trust me, it is infinitely better in every way.
