It would seem that whoever came up with the idea of putting Final Fantasy characters and Disney characters into the same game and to make them fight against evil forces of darkness would be ripe for the Asylum and yet here we are and we love it.

As somebody who has played nearly all of the games, with the sole exception being Dream Drop Distance I think, I always felt like the original game had a certain gritty charm to it. It's simpler to understand than the later games, that get way to confusing for "story reasons". Things like Riku's dark form or the main villain were terrifying as a kid, but also intriguing.

In terms of gameplay the game also shines with a unique system and many puzzles and enemies that play with the idea of elements, a theme largely abandoned in later games. This game really allows for you to customize your character, with a system of different skills that range from "nice to have" to "i cannot live without this". There are many secerts and a lot to be discovered for the completionists and there is a lot of bonus content with special secret encounters that are available in the Final Mix version of the game and that are very hard but very rewarding to beat. The battle system and command system might feel a little janky at times but you quickly get used to it.

I also love how you go to every world and build lasting connections, that last even into the sequels. It's so sweet to see Sora return to worlds like the olymp and to meet his friends like Hercules for a second time in the following games.

With this game we have a game I can only call a masterpiece. I know it has it's flaws and you can think of the whole series and how they've handled the story in the later games however you want, but you've got to admit: they've nailed this first one.

10/10 for having facinated and terrified me when I was a kid. Glad that now that I am an adult I can play this game without my big brother in the room. This game is part of my childhood. Memories that are forever to be cherished.
