Haiku the robot is in most ways an uninspired Hollow Knight ripoff, but it does trump its inspiration in one key way: the map design. Haiku keeps it small and simple with areas frequently interconnecting and frequently double back on each other to avoid redoing the same platforming or combat section. Most respectable is how open the game ends up being. You do end up needing every upgrade and to beat 3 main bosses, but said bosses can be beaten in any order, and there are many paths which will lead to the same upgrades. You can even sequence break certain collectibles by finding optional chips which augment your moveset. While it isn't non-linear enough to truly make it stand out, I was pleasantly surprised that a modern metroidvania simply let me wander rather then excessive railroading with some hidden sequence breaks.
