I was genuinely enjoying my romp around the gorgeous environment and shooting stuff, but it quickly dawned on me just how little depth the RPG mechanics actually had, and my save is currently broken and unable to move forward. I probably won't end up returning at this point, which is a real shame

Unable to talk to Kira in the data-miner quest. Seems to be a semi-common issue looking online.

It's worth sticking to, and if you have to restart and just stick to story missions you're not missing on a heck of a lot.
Agreed on the RPG mechanics being thin, it's more of a twin-stick but I went into it with that expectation so perhaps it didn't disappoint me as much.
