I tried, but simply can't bring myself to play this game very long and while in general the game itself receives a lot of positive reception, it seems a lot of Steam users have the same problem. Only around 40% killed a crimson head, an enemy that appears like 1 or 2 hours into the game depending on how quick or slow you play through it, while only 76% ever defeated their first zombie. And looking at the achievements for beating the game, only 22% percent finished the game with Jill and 14% with Chris, with only 9% ever beating the game with both. I know these statistics are somewhat flawed, because not everyone owning it, may even installed and played it, but even thinking of the 76% as every user that played the game, it stills means a lot of them did not even play like 2 hours of it.

The problems I have with the game are in personal nature, though. I simply do not like the fixed camera installments. When playing this I just recently finished Resident Evil Zero after a long break (so MAYBE, I will continue/retry this game in like... 2 years or what), but even with that one I just finished it, to have it finished. I just prefer being able to freely investigate my surroundings, see the enemies in front of me, while not having to wait for them to stumble into the camera and not having one of those door cutscene whenever I walk through one. These get kind of annoying when you're lost or have to backtrack the same area for the 100st time. I know that originally they were included to hide the loading time of the games, but I've played this one on a modern gaming PC and I highly doubt that loading the pre-rendered backgrounds and few 3D models do even take that long on my machine.

I really hope that Capcom will one day make a remake of this one in the style of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Until then, I guess it's unlikely that I'll ever finish a version of the first game, but should I ever decide to change my mind and continue and finish this game, I might update my review.

Not saying, I wasn't.

My reviews are always meant to be seen subjectively. I'm not trying to say the game itself is bad, because that's not, hence why I even admit in the first line, that is positively received by the community and say it's a personal problem.

I think it's that I just did not grew up with this style of games when I was too young to play them (I was literally just about a month old when the first game released) and was only really introduced to them around the time, the universially hated 6 dropped. Before that I've only seen some Let's Plays here and there of the older games. And even after 6 I didn't go back to the original 1, 2 or 3, but played through 4. And after these two I thought "Well, why not start with 0 and than play the remake of 1, the remake of 2, the remake of 3, up til the most recent one?", but when playing 0 I already started noticing that I just do not enjoy this older playstyle that much. But I have fun with the remake of 2.

Oh thank you for actually using the tag thing, sometimes I wonder how many people I've left hanging after replying once in their reviews and then forgetting about it by morning! (The deleted comment is mine, I wanted to correct a minor thing but forgot about Backloggd doin the DELETED thing...)

I didn't grow up with this style of games either, far from it, I was 'bout a year old when this was released originally, grew up playing games far removed from this style, and didn't play this until relatively few years ago. So if I could get into this as much as I did, I think you can too; age and even personal preferences are only a problem if you let them be.

I'll say, I haven't played the remakes myself and I'm not interested in doing so, but even if a remake of this in the current style is made, it wouldn't replace this in any way, unlike this replacing to a reasonable degree the original since the remake is working on the same building. Things like fixed cameras and door cut scenes aren't there only due to technical limitations, and should be understood in-game in their own terms, just like with any game! To try and reason exactly what the elements involved are doing and why is more fruitful than simply seeing if you find them pleasant or not... Sure, you could find it to be dumb or something after understanding them well, but it's good to think about it regardless, you're already on a site like this after all, haha.
