When it's a Ninja Gaiden homage, it's great. When it takes that 16 bit, it's also great. Then it turns into a somewhat messy and mediocre Metroidvania, which doesn't work as well (despite some really clever stuff with moving between 8 and 16 bit graphics). On top of that, it drags on too much at the end.
