I remember being somewhat interested in this back when it was announced. Then Monster Hunter World came out and I completely forgot about it up until semi recently when I gave it a bit more of a proper try. I expect to forget about it again in a couple days. Combat feels very bare bones and weightless, just mindlessly slash away until they die. A tail or a horn might come off, but it doesn’t have the same deliberacy or consequence at in it’s influences. Most of the weapons (with the exception of the guns) play pretty much the same, your attacks lack that physical impact, the monster designs I found unmemorable, their AI and movesets were very stodgy and predictable, the world, the npcs, were just kind of there, the game pretty much plays itself. Put plainly, it’s unfun. It feels like the most basic, bare bones take on a Monster Hunter and mechanically it’s behind even the older portable Monster Hunter entries. I’m all for the idea of Monster Hunter-likes branching out as a genre, but I’m a touch shocked that even a lot of Monster Hunter people thought this would be the one to do it.
