Backbone starts strong, with an interesting mystery and fantastic pixel art graphics but severely drops the ball in the second half of the game, where the story takes a drastic left turn and more or less abandons its initial setup.

The writing switches from witty and slightly whimsical to an attempted poetic tone that approaches pretension for me. Maybe in another game the second half could have worked, but not here.
