Gain Ground is a really cool arcade style shmup with strategic elements.

Your goal is simple, either get to the exit with at least one person or kill everyone on screen within the time limit. If only it was as easy as it sounded. The action can get quite intense with the amount of enemies and projectiles that come flying after you, but if you bring the right person for the job and get your approach down it can be done without too much trouble.

The game also notably boasts about 20 characters, which is quite a lot for a game originally made in 1988, even if the catch is that they're little sprites that are often edits of each other. The best one I think was the viking looking dude with the bow, because he was fast and could shoot and lob arrows in every direction. Make sure he stays alive though! He's not an original three character and you can lose him in your playthrough if you don't rescue him with another person.

Normally you rescue characters in your playthrough to be able to play as them, but by setting the game to hard you get access to everyone right off the bat, which I believe is actually my preferred method of playing the game, though you can still lose the characters that aren't the original three.

There's just something awfully cozy about this one despite it being as intense as it is sometimes, I think it's the fact that action all takes place on one screen. The first stage music is also a huge favorite of mine for the system, which is impressive because I'm a massive fan of Genesis music.
