A fish that is a dude or a dude that is a fish? The answer to this question remains a mystery.

Fish Dude is an arcade-style game where you follow the number one rule of nature, eat or be eaten. Eat the smaller fish while avoiding getting eaten by the bigger fish (or cats in fishing boats apparently). It could be seen as potentially addicting if you played this back in the day, but booting this up randomly on my DS via emulator just made me get frustrated at the camera. It's incredibly easy to go in one direction and have a bigger fish suddenly lunge at you, giving you about five centiseconds to react and run away, and these assholes can be pretty persistent if you don't exploit the scenery and get them hung up on some corner. Going down in this game is one of the most dangerous things you could possibly do in your entire life, it's basically an invite for a big fish to ambush you out of nowhere.

The biggest oddity for this game is needing to press the start button to go past every screen. To go to the next stage, at the continue screen, game over screen, title screen, etc. All of it uses the start button, I dunno maybe I haven't played enough game boy games, but it just comes off as crazy to me. The password screen is also only two characters long in the American version, you'd totally crack that shit out of boredom during a car trip in record time.

I also found out that this game goes for a thousand bucks complete. Like, why is it always the dumbest shit that gets expensive? Someone is laughing their ass off at us, because I would feel ripped off buying this at five bucks loose.

Fish...dude? Dude fish? Dude, where's my fish?

If you want to see the best retrospective on Fish Dude out there (and who wouldn't!) Jeremy Parish did a great dive into it for Game Boy Works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDvdYe5sgV4
