Honestly I kinda vibed with this game, love me some bugs fighting other bugs action. Hell, Insector X flat out feels like it's trying to seduce me with it's use of ancient Egyptian architecture in it's first stage. It's a shame they throw that out as soon as you enter the second stage where it looks like the back of some guy's yard, but without any of the fun shit like a children's sandbox or an overturned toy dumptruck.

The lack of any parallax scrolling really makes the game look cheaper, now I know why people even older than me go nuts for that shit. It's actually funny when at the end of a section your guy stops momentarily, I thought my game locked up at first due to how nothing is moving on screen during it. They apparently fucked with the character designs and turned everything from cartoonish to a sci-fi robot style, which I'm gonna say actually worked out better. I dunno, maybe it's because I played Gadget Twins recently, but I'm all for seeing this adorable moth robot carrying a large cannon with it's legs, meanwhile this spider thing with human-looking limbs freaks me the fuck out.

I don't think this one's too bad, but yeah just play Bio-Hazard Battle/Crying for your bug shmup fix.

I have a soft spot for this game and my wife loves it. She made an observation that I've been unable to confirm via googling of any sort -- she suggests that if you're playing well and then poorly in the later levels (Stage 4 and 5, I believe), that she noticed the game's enemy behavior was different. I can't recall precisely whether it was enemy layout or number of projectiles on-screen or what, but she said she had noticed it multiple times, generally around Stage 4 when she started running into problems.

I like to imagine that someone built a simple-but-clever AI system into a Genesis game with no expectations that anyone would ever notice. That'd be magical.

lol, yeah I'm not sure about the AI thing. I love it when you chime in with your experience, I saw your rating here and was kinda secretly hoping you'd have something for it.

The five star rating is strictly nostalgia and the awesome soundtrack -- I think I've done that with more than a few older games. I'd never recommend it to anyone who wasn't already heavily interested in shmups, or happened to be my wife and somehow hadn't played it already. :P
