I don't understand the nostalgia for this game. I grew up with it and loved it as a kid but going back to this makes me want to punt my head through a wall because of how awful and slippery the physics are

Try the GameCube version, it has the least finnicky controls. I like it even with the awkward PS2 controls but if that's your big issue with it the GC version may alleviate your problems. The PC version (which you played) is the absolute worst iteration of the game.

I've played it on PS2, Xbox, PC and GameCube and the physics are the same on all versions.
