Im writing this as I wait for 30 minutes for the day/night cycle to flip to night. One huge problem with this when you have requisite times is to force folks to wait. I get the idea of killing time and having it feel immersive but I guarantee there's 0 chance that this is why they did it.

Man, this might be my last official Pokemon game unless they get it together and can deliver something that feels whole and even. It's so bafflingly mixed in its presentation, polish, and really any of its aspects.

I thought some of the story and dialogue were pretty big improvements from past titles in that it felt natural and had a pretty unique angle. It didn't pan out much in my reckoning, as even the interesting characters and events were interesting only briefly. They either were then too repetitive, or just not doing much.

It's also so odd the level of technical failures that came in. Even several months after release and multiple patches, it still runs terribly at times and looks worse than any of the others. The shortcuts being unskillfully hidden, the bland environments and relatively boring and confusing returning mon/new mon choices. I commend them for trying to shake some parts of it up, but it needs way more polish and something juicy to make me want to play another of these.

The animations on the characters were an improvement, but everything about the areas save for a couple interiors was pretty boring. I'm happy I bought this as a gift and got it in a bundle deal with the other copy in a way that gave GF 0 cash because whoever made the decision to over stuff the release periods with Pokemon games doesn't deserve it. This is just all around the most uninteresting title in the series for anything but the main quests. Most everything else is repetitive and ugly. Some of the music still slaps though.

I did cry at the Titan quest part, in the first couple when the sad sick puppy poke is introduced

I hope future titles look more like Arceus and at least get some treatment to make its barren spaces less ugly and uninteresting, without losing the qol and few positive additions shown in Violet

Nevermind, I bounced. Not worth waiting and scouring the academy for the next phase. Officially the first Pokemon game I did not finish. Lowest amount of time in one as well.

Its a rough tragedy.
I think this game was a step forward from Sw/Sh in a lot of ways (particularly the story) but the rest of the game just does not hold water at all, making it unbearable in so many aspects. I have not reopened the game since I finished it days after release and I don't know if I'm willing to get the DLC or not.

Thoughtful review.

What were your thoughts on Arceus? I spent less time in that game but thought it handled the open-world scheme much better with revised gameplay. (nevermind just read it lmao)
