What the fuck was this?

Every time I try and do a kickflip like the tutorial tells me to it says I've done a "Late Kickflip".
What's the difference? Am I doing it too early? Am I clicking it in the wrong way?
I don't know because neither the game nor the walkthroughs I'm trying to find don't tell me.
