Most of gen 1's problems were purely technical so it inherently improves the experience greatly. It's still a bland story, the route encounter tables are still bad, and the game even prohibits you from evolving pokemon like Golbat and Scyther until after you beat it. It's the remake with the best justification for existing, but it's middle of the road in terms of quality of pokemon games.
