This game is simultaneously a satire of the genre, poking fun and subverting common jrpg tropes and concepts, while also being a celebration of the creativity and joy the genre brings. As someone who loves jrpgs, I found it to be a very fresh, fun, and endearing experience. I love the creativity behind this game- seeing so many interesting and varied settings, characters, gameplay ideas, music styles, and just about everything else in one package was excellent and worked great as a whole. Each mini story is fun to experience, and there's as much humor as there are touching moments and themes. The culmination of it all at the end is also something I loved. Everything here is exciting and memorable, though there are some small annoyances to be seen. Due to the structure, this game kind of has no choice but to lack some of the feeling of progression the genre is built around and it is a little bit less satisfying to constantly restart and rebuild another character from scratch compared to watching a party grow over the course of an adventure. I also don't think the combat here is anything to write home about due to how simple and admittedly repetitive it can get considering most chapters only have one or a handful of characters to use instead of a typical full party plus a general lack of challenge. I don't think these issues are things that could've or should've been changed necessarily, as they are products of the design of the game and I don't want it to sacrifice its creativity, but it's still things that make me less inclined to come back to it all- especially given it's already so memorable as is I don't feel I need to replay it at the moment. The only other thing worth mentioning is that some of its changes as a remake are questionable, like some translation choices and things like how it uses one font vs how every chapter had a different font that added character in the original, but aside from one notable example in the prehistory chapter that kind of ruins the intention of the scene this is still a fantastic remake and great game overall. If you like JRPGs, play this and try to go in blind as best as you can. Wonderful time.
