i've been playing this for a few days and while i would usually wait for me to finish a game before sharing my thoughts, i can not contain how elated i am at how much of an improvement it is over the original. almost all of my issues with the original game were addressed and i'm very pleasantly surprised. what stands out the most to me is how interesting the characters are and the beautiful and varied environments, it really feels like a rare instance of a dev learning from not only the issues of the original but the parts of it that worked. would not be surprised if this ended up being my goty. i'm going to be locking comments and ignoring this 'review' once i finish the game and get my actual review out, i just genuinely could not stop myself from gushing about this game

Oh shit I actually thought the characters seened worse than in the original, if they're actually well written though I might check it out. The one forest girl's design is really... something.

i personally could not get myself to care for anyone from the first game other than tressa but i genuinely love this whole cast, osvald and partitio i especially can't get enough of. i do also think octopath 1 came off to me as "what if we made a 20 hour more generic snes style rpg into a 100 hour rpg on modern hardware" to the point where i could not get myself to play more than 10 hours or so whereas octopath 2 to me feels like one of those interesting hidden gems of the platform but as a 100 hour rpg on modern hardware and that's just a lot more appealing to me

Hmm okay, I think I'll take your word for it since I usually agree with what you have to say anyways. Apparently a lot of people had that issue with octopath 1 but I enjoyed it a lot myself for what it was. I played the demo of 2 and picked the nurse lady, wasn't a big fan of the writing in her story but maybe the others are better? I guess either way I can't go wrong with it, the gameplay and visuals are still fun. Thank you for the review !!

castti is easily the least interesting character in the game by far even if i still like her so i dont blame you for thinking the writing and characters arent that good lol

haha omg nooo, she's the only female character who's design I actually like. Hopefully the other girls are interesting enough that I can overlook it..

id highly suggest you go with osvald as soon as possible tbh, id genuinely play a whole rpg just about his story

I wasn't really into it before but now I'm soo curious if it gets this much praise from you lol, ill definitely check him out when I (eventually) get the game

its definitely not a profound masterpiece but it does what it sets out to do (being an improvement on octopath 1 as a sequel and being a good jrpg) so well that i cant help but respect it, very similar to how i feel about dragon quest 3 and chrono trigger

It's so good to hear they improved, I'm not entirely sure why everyone hated octopath 1 so bad.. i thought that game was pretty solid and well crafted. So if this one is even better then that's fantastic cause I'm like, the only octopath fan lol. I wish I could pirate (?) The games like you do, I really wanna see what's up with 2 now

i just personally think its a bit too plain/traditional for how long the game is, pretty much every issue i have with the game comes from that. i probably wouldve liked it a lot if i played it in that small portion of my life during high school where i was getting into rpgs but wasnt too concerned with games being too long lol

Oh really... I usually hate traditional rpgs but I never really got that impression with octopath. At the very least, I never had to grind (blegh) and exploring was very fun. I can understand it now though, looking back on it. The only issue I had with 1 was that awful final boss, no way I was completing that even if the music was really good.
So excited to hear this as someone who really didn't like the first one at all.

Is there a lot more interaction between the party members and additional reasons why they've ganged up together?

Would you have to play the first one to get what's going on in this one?

@appreciations, each character gets paired off with one other for their own side stories which i havent done yet but id assume it does something in the way of that. im around 30 hours in and i still havent even done the chapter 2s for most characters though so i dont really have much comment for that in general sadly

@nekomanscer, not at all. its a completely different setting, think of it like dragon quest or final fantasy where you can just pick one up and be fine
Oh wow this game must be huge. Thank you for the info!

so excited 2 play this

Oh no, I am thrilled to play this! I can't wait!
Worth actually finishing the first one or should l just grab this?

i think anything you'd find and enjoy in octopath 1 you'd enjoy much more here, but it's up to you really
Glad to hear! I quite like the first game and I'm about 10 hours into 2 and am really appreciating the better variety in main stories (branching paths, overall just more going on with each character, etc.) I do gotta ask, you've already put 30 hours in without touching any Chapter 2s? I've only touched 2 in my 10 hours, and gotten 6 of the 8 characters (still don't have the Apothecary or Hunter).

Just curious what you've been spending most of your playtime doing, and wondering how you unlock those pair-up character quests, those sound really fun!!

oh ive done a good amount of chapter 2s and even osvalds chapter 3, just not most of them yet
