Possibly my favorite run n gun ever made only rivaled by Contra Hard Corps and Metal Slug X. I’ll admit I love those games almost equally yet this game probably edges them out slightly mainly for its difficulty balancing.

Gunstar Heroes has a perfect sense of challenge. Giving you a generous health bar not many run n guns would offer while still giving you challenging waves of enemies and a unique line up of bosses to still put your skills to the test. It’s balanced pretty perfectly imo and never leans into too hard or too easy territory. Perfect for people new to run n guns yet still offering a fun experience for veterans.

This entire game feels like an all killer no filler type of experience. The game itself being really short, makes it even more of a memorable experience. Every level feels different from the last. The game has a great variety of levels that not only changes things up stage to stage but it always primarily focuses on combat encounters and while offering really cool set pieces. There’s always something interesting or fun to look forward to and best of all there’s no drop in quality. Even the shoot ‘em up stage while I’ll admit is the lowest part of the game and while it does stray away a bit from the normal run n gun formula its still very exciting and a nice change up before the final stretch of the game.

I really like the art direction and how it differs from other games in the genre.Offering more cartoony and colorful art than the gritty and grotesque art direction seen in some of the contra and metal slugs. But what it lacks in grit, it definitely makes up for in charm and on top of that the explosions combined with the effects used for your weapon makes shooting at bad guys a really exciting experience.

Really this whole game feels like one big dopamine rush. Going from screen to screen blasting these goofy lookin enemies left to right. Looking at all the crazy explosions and of course enjoying all the different bosses and scenarios the game puts you in. Finally having the option to combine weapons together while being able to change weapons on the fly makes this game feel more unique while also being replayable.
