Perhaps a little underrated?

Sure it’s confusing and isn’t that well designed as a 2d action game. Yet in a way it kinda acts as a early survival horror game which is pretty cool. Having of course a horror theme along with a open map with a bit of item management and a killer on the loose. Having the player explore Camp Crystal lake while Jason is slowly killing off Camp counselors and kids. A good mood change after a couple rounds of Bubble Bobble I guess.

As a whole the game adapts the movie as well as they could have with the hardware and the standards of the time. It has the weapons, the location, the premise of the movies and jason himself all brought into a 8bit style. Even if jason has a dumb recolor it’s still surprisingly iconic in its own right. Jason kinda works as a bit of a prelude to something like Nemesis in RE, a powerful enemy that lurks around the map and attacks you randomly. Although i’m by no means so it’s as good as RE, I can’t help but feel like this game is a bit of ahead of it’s time in some ways. Attempting primitive survival horror while also somehow adapting R rated slasher films.
That alone is impressive as the nes not only has many limitations in terms of hardware but also is strict in terms of what you can do. They essentially had to make a Friday The 13th game that can sit next to Super Mario Brothers. And considering the source material and those limitations i’ll say they vaguely followed the movies but close enough to resemble them. I mean this is the NES I doubt they could have recreated the Kevin Bacon death scene and gotten away with it.

Doesn’t change the fact the game is extremely confusing and at times feels like simons quest, another flawed game ahead of the curve. Yet with a guide you can make progress and have some fun. Or you can slowly run around and have Jason kill everyone and eventually kill you. Hey it’s more accurate to the movies that way.

Solid 3/5
needs more Mike Matei.
Cover art goes hard too it’s like Friday The 13th mixed with Psychedelic Rock
