I gotta say this game would have probably been unbearable without the QOL features in the PR.

The map made the frustratingly designed dungeons easier to navigate, and I would turn off encounters a bit to backtrack paths while not completely avoiding fighting. And the auto battle probably saved me hours, while also causing me to engage less into the battle system that so many people hate. I basically just auto attacked so it was pretty boring.

Since I didn’t engage much in combat I can’t say how well the Elder Scrollsy leveling works when taking the time to entertain different options and builds. I barely used magic at all. But if I can just attack through everything while sticking with the weapon types everyone starts with, I don’t see how people had trouble with the stats leveling, besides it being confusing. I never had to hit my own party to level health, and I never had to grind on purpose. I feel like it could have been cool to level spells individually from a choice and progression perspective, but it would probably be annoyingly slow. In any case battling was very boring but it was a bit my own fault, and maybe I wouldn’t have liked it if I engaged with the systems more anyway.

I was fairly engaged and charmed by how the story was executed, especially for a game this early. Some story elements fall flat like the villain and the “twist-villian”, but there are interesting story elements all the way through in my opinion.

I understand the hate for FFII if I had to play it without a map and auto battle and whatever other changes, but the Pixel Remaster was a decent experience compared to FF1 PR, I just had a worse time with combat and didn’t like the dungeons as much.

Guy Speak Beaver!

2 FF games down now, wish me luck.
