This game was the entire month of April 2020 for me. During one of the worst months in modern human history, Persona 5 Royal was a stylish life simulator and JRPG masterpiece that consumed my life in the best way. Removing the bias of the time period, Persona 5 Royal is the tightest version of the most fluent JRPG's of the last decade. Its presentation is constantly engaging, from its too-good-to-be-true soundtrack to its pacing to even the menus, compounded by a game that literally allows you to play out a year in a high school obsolesced by rebellion-led superheroes saving the world from corruption and evil. All of the characters, both the main team and the supporting roles, play crucial roles in sucking the player into spending every waking moment in this slick version of Japan, fortified by mostly excellent social link routes and side activities that encourage you to "take your time" and explore everything this massive adventure has to offer. The more action-focused gameplay rotates between stealth navigation through Zelda-like dungeons and ripping through enemies in turn-based combat that is predicated upon "catch-em-all" style Persona collection and exploiting weaknesses for more and more threatening enemies and bosses. Building relationships and leveling up your party goes hand in hand, and becoming the ultimate Phantom Thief is a task that is consistently enjoyable across the staggering 115 hours it took to finally see the credits. Whether you take a week, a month, or years to complete this masterpiece, Persona 5 is a must play for any fan of games looking for a wholly unique experience to envelop your life.
