Pokemon's always had kind of a rough go of it when they upgrade to a new console, huh? Well, at least since the DS era, anyway. Pokemon XY are no different, but I still think it's a pretty enjoyable gen in spite of that. The Pokemon variety route to route makes it pretty fun to try new team compositions on different playthroughs and makes it pretty fun to do Nuzlocke runs, especially.

The story itself isn't great, which comes off considerably worse after how fantastic Gen 5's story was, and the characters feel a little underbaked. I don't think the friend team were bad, necessarily, but they definitely could've stood to have more development. Like... Trevor's whole backstory is contained in a house in Luminose that's easy to miss because Luminose is a nightmare to navigate. It never comes up outside of that despite being a pretty cool hook for a character arc? It's a mess. HOWEVER, the Looker storyline in the postgame is genuinely really good, so it's actually worth getting to the game for that.

Megas are a lot of fun and I kind of miss them, honestly, though the distribution is kind of baffling. Who thought Garchomp needed one. Also I really do like this gen's Pokemon, a lot of them are very cute and good. Outside of the great Looker storyline there isn't much of a postgame except for the obligatory Battle Tower type thing, and this... really feels like it needed a third version? A Z version, perhaps, about the third legendary that was weirdly inserted into Sun and Moon? Ehh, we need to get to the next gen for the anniversary. It'll be fine.

Anyway, this gen is very much imperfect, but I thought it was a lot of fun anyway.
