I ADORE the 2018 indie darling, Celeste. I'm also very much a child of the N64. That might be a bit of a surprise seeing as I was born 6 years after the release of that system. That's because my cousins gave me and my brother their hand-me-down system along with the crown jewel of the console, Super Mario 64. Long story short: that game went on to become my favorite of all time, influenced my tastes to an immeasurable amount, and still inspires in me a ton of nostalgia.

When I learned the Celeste team had created a little N64 spin-off of their 2D Platforming masterpiece, I was an easy sell. Or rather I was an easy download because this thing is absolutely free. You have no excuse not to give it a whirl. On this day, January 30th I got home from work and immediately played through the whole thing over the span of 1.5 blissful hours.

Celeste 64 is just fantastic. It's not reinventing the wheel or anything, no, it honestly does the opposite. It has all the trappings of an N64 title: a less-than-ideal camera, slippery physics, and a tinny soundtrack. All of these limitations I find so endearing. This game features a bite-sized open world with 30 Strawberries to collect by navigating chunky 3D Madeleine through precise platforming challenges. It boggles my mind this was created in a "week-ish" as stated by the game. These developers are at the top of their game and I love how they decided to experiment on a fun little side project for us to enjoy.

I really have nothing to say poorly about it. This is simply just extremely up my alley. I could absolutely see myself learning to speedrun this thing because of it's short runtime and satisfying mechanics. Part of me wants to say "I'd love to see the team dedicate some serious time to making a full version" but honestly I'd rather they take their talents and make something brand new such as Earthblade.
