There's something so deeply endearing and vulnerable about this short coming-of-age story. A boy called Alex stumbles across a strange little town and begins to find his place in its community, while coming to terms with his own past and figuring out what his future might hold. It's heartbreaking in places and the story avoids getting dragged down by undue sentimentality. Newfound Courage is clearly a work of passion and comes from a place of empathy, which more than makes up for the somewhat generic presentation and helps it become an emotionally resonant, affecting story.
