Berserk

I'm going Berserk (1989)!!!!!!

I have no idea why people give this game shit all over the place, it's super fun! My only complaints happen to be because of the same thing, you can only play as Guts for the vast majority of the story missions (like 40/46 I think is what I counted). This has the other issue of making hard mode too easy pretty early in due to overleveling. The berserk mode is a bit too much of a step up so I just stuck to hard. The game was never really hard but it did feel better on hard while that lasted, especially that first Zodd fight (this seems to be a trend in these games). That said, Guts does look and play differently as you progress through the story which keeps things fresh to a degree (and all characters gain more moves). Otherwise yeah, the roster is small, but I feel like how varied the characters are more than made up for it. I also don't think there were many more characters that could've been playable here (though it is strange that Silat and Mozgus seemed to have fully fledged movesets in their boss battles). I skipped most of the cutscenes but the presentation is pretty solid aside from me not liking the golden age movies' style at all which they shamelessly use as the cutscenes in this game. It is awesome that so much of the story was covered though, couldn't have done a better job in that regard.

This game starts off with the most banger goated raw fire boss fight ever, Nosferatu Zodd (the trend is real) which is a real challenge and super fun, tons of contextual actions and scenes you'll see depending on how you approach the fight and man that had me excited for the rest of the game! Unfortunately that's the best part of it, by a longshot. The stages are extremely dull, mob fights get old and eventually just feel like a hindrance once you don't feel like pummeling them for exp anymore and you get blocked by trees for the 80th time while slowly walking towards the objective marker. It's basically impossible to die while you're just traversing the stages normally. They're barren and usually visual vomit. The camera isn't good either, you can't move it around manually it just has a set angle for every position you could possibly walk to. I did like the Troll's Den stage and the snowfield area was also fine. The rest were total stinkers, Qliphoth being the worst of them. I still stuck through the game and I do definitely have positive things to say as I enjoyed the game a lot overall. It's just such a bummer that the rest of the game didn't live up to the standard set by the very first boss. Some later bosses were pretty good, I enjoyed Slan, Griffith, Charles (Transformed), and Grunbeld (Normal) quite a bit. The survival rounds against the trolls also kept me on my feet. Most other bosses are fine, I didn't think any were terrible, the worst is definitely the trio they keep reusing. It was a little weird how approaching the final stretch they just kinda throw bosses at you over and over in a row. Another issue I had was when you get all your partners and the game proceeds to not let you use them most of the time, I found them to be a great addition to the moveset. My favorite thing about the game, apart from the Zodd fight, was the story presentation. How cinematic the fights are (for better or for worse gameplay wise) and the game's style really make it a great adaptation.

Really jank but I enjoyed it in a masochistic way, especially the Zodd fight (we're 3/3 on these being something of note) which is insanely difficult on hard mode. This game really feels like an endurance run, it's such an asshole with the level design. The soundtrack goes extremely hard. No opinion on the story as I skipped most of the cutscenes. DMC2 ripped the final boss chimera thingy from this game.
