A harrowing experience that I would nonetheless describe as 'beautiful', albeit not in the usual sense. The visual design and atmosphere are absolutely top notch. There are some truly horrific things you have to do or witness, but none of it felt gratuitous, and it all added to the deeply unnerving game world. It's full of great little details hinting at the body horror and overt sexuality of Giger, from the spurt of blood that erupts after recharging your health... thing to the mysterious white fluid exploding from various pillars of flesh. It absolutely nails what its going for, and the set dressing is top notch stuff.

But the gameplay? More of a mixed bag. I was most enjoying it during the walking sim-like parts with light puzzle elements. Even then, the fantastically noisy visual design did make it a bit hard to find the one thing you needed to interact with to advance the plot at various points, and some of the larger areas are incredibly easy to get lost in. Also the combat.... yeah it sucks, no getting away from that one. It's incredibly awkward to engage with, and choosing not to engage with it (which is usually an option) means you get to experience less of the gorgeous* world.

But if you're playing this, you aren't coming here for an FPS, you are coming to experience a novel and frankly horrific Gigeresque world. And it delivers that in spades.
