I think this is a good direction for the series. It's fun but lacking in many areas. There could be more to the gameplay loop, dungeons and more puzzle solving, more side content. Even just the visuals. Graphical fidelity aside, this game has no visual identity. Look at any other big Nintendo franchise and you'll see their games have settled on an art style. It needed more time in the oven but they'll never get that when the Pokémon company has new product to sell each and every year.
