This review contains spoilers
Story wise, Sonic Adventure 2 is almost an absolute masterpiece, it does with Shadow something truly incredible that I don’t think I’ve seen in any other game, the story behind him and everything with Gerald’s diary is just awesome and will immediately hook you. Shadow was the best of the 2 new characters and it wasn’t even a competition, Rouge is just.. there I guess.
The Dark story is much much better than Hero, it does feel a lot more shorter despite only being 2 stages shorter but it makes up for that with its incredible storytelling techniques and cutscenes. The stages in general are better and while most of the bosses will take you under a minute to beat, it’s still really fun to play Dark. Hero on the other hand is definitely worse, there’s not as much of a compelling story on its end of the stick and the levels (especially Stage 16) are just not fun.
One fatal flaw both of the stories have in common are the abysmal Knuckles/Rouge stages, Rouge’s are more bearable but both are really really bad, most of the time they do NOT work and the levels are too big to the point where most of the areas aren’t even used to find the crystals, I kid you not one of these took me an astounding 22 minutes to beat, most of the Knuckles ones especially really have no connection to the story aside from like the last two (excluding Last Story), also any level with Rails included in the Sonic/Shadow stages just does not work at all, especially hopping between them.
The game controls really well aside from that, it looks really great for a 2001, every playable character is fun to control, even Knuckles and Rouge despite their horrible stages. While I felt the voice acting was somewhat lacking in Hero and the music was too loud, the aforementioned good stories made up for them, but overall Sonic Adventure 2 was still really good thankfully, I don’t know if it’s better or worse than Generations, for one it actually has a story, but at the same time controls much worse but if the treasure hunting stages and some other ones were fixed this would be an easy 8-9/10.
Also this was played on a PS3 not a Dreamcast
