The best region/map of any Pokémon game with the WORST selection of Pokémon.
The way to really enjoy this game is to trade over a team of level 5 mons from the start. I always have to wait until I have 6 or 7 badges before I can catch anything actually worth training, and some of the best Gen II Pokémon aren't even in Johto. Who thought that wild Pokémon levels should be so low in Kanto? Post-game-only areas introduce new Pokémon, but they're 30-50 levels below the rest of your team by the time you actually encounter them. Gold and Silver made me wait until Celadon City to catch a level 15 Houndour, and I can't believe HGSS didn't change that at all!
If you're the kind of player who uses Randomizers, this is the best game in the series. If you just play it how it is, you might be wishing for better Pokémon for the first half of the game.
