It really weirds me out that a lot of people who feel the need to defend this game on "it's self-critical" grounds (trust me: you don't gotta) will in the same breath say they hated the hospital level, which to me is a perfect formal expression of the idea of molding yourself into a machine for killing to the point where you are unable to function properly in its absence.

I get if you didn't enjoy it, but like...come on.

Similarly, I was surprised by people who play the sequel's levels where you have to play as the writer and kill everyone. I personally didn't even know you had the option to kill people in those levels. But you can, you just have to force the character to do it. And it's so strange to me that some people perceived it as an annoying obstacle rather than a recontextualization of the violence.

Exactly! A shame, too, because on top of the recontextualization that gameplay switch-up is cool, where you're having to play against your own instincts.
