Great game from my youth with a lot of nostalgia.

Alex Builds His Farm is a real classic and a valuable piece of nostalgia from my youth.

It is a relatively simple game in which you build your farm (hence the name) and complete a load of tasks to complete your picture book. The “checklist concept” of this game is oddly satisfying and somehow really makes you feel like you are working on a farm on which you got a load of things to do.

Although the game follows a linear pattern in which you complete certain tasks and mini puzzles in order, you can walk a fair distance across the farmlands, giving a feel of open world. Especially because you can talk to different characters of your family in the areas you visit.

The tasks themselves are all child’s play and do not require a lot of thought, but because this is a kid’s game, this is to be expected. Certain chores and puzzles can be quite long however to complete, giving you the feeling of accomplishment.

In terms of graphics, for the time, Alex Builds His Farm looks amazing. It is certainly nothing special now, but as a kid, it could not get any better than this. The animations and walk cycles are all on point and when completing a task, the little cutscene that plays is smooth and nice to look at.

In the music and sound department, it is all right but nothing special. You got your stereotypical farm music playing in the background and although simple, it works fine with the game and enhances your farming experience.

The controls are a little clunky and stiff, but in a game like this, where you do not die or need to defeat enemies, it is fine.

As a kid, I did not know sometimes what to do or where to go, but this was mainly, yet again, because I did not master the English language yet. Besides that, the information you get is good enough and you need to search for the intended item, quest or shape yourself, presenting some challenge to the game.

The weird part is that I could play this game with just as much fun and nostalgia as I did back then. This is because of its mechanics, in which you fill a book with pictures and need to complete all your chores. Because I love to complete lists of tasks and making stuff complete, the way Alex Builds His Farm implements this is perfect.

In the end, Alex Builds His Farm is simple yet a lot of fun and even as a grown ass man, I would still recommend it to everyone.

played as a kid. it's cute and looks great for the time, but its controls are archaic. even though theres a lot of stuff to do, its all either repetitive or clunky
