Avalon Code plot, as well as the gameplay, revolves around the Book of Prophecy situated on the touch-sensitive lower screen of the Nintendo DS. In order to record a person, monster, plant, or weapon in its pages, the player performs a “Code Scan”, which is done by striking the target to be recorded with the Book itself (mapped to the B button at all times). The story centers on a young peasant who has been plagued with prophetic nightmares for weeks prior to the beginning of the story. His or her latest dream, shown in the opening cinematic, features a mysterious voice which reveals not only that the protagonist's world has undergone countless reincarnations in the past and is fated to continue the cycle of correction, destruction, and rebirth until “true enlightenment” is achieved, but also that the main character him- or herself has been tasked by the Powers-That-Be to deem the people, places, and things of the current world worthy (or unworthy) of being carried over into the next after the fiery purge.

When you go to sleep, there's a chance you'll be woken up by a random heroine saying, "Who's this?" You have to identify them by their voice and pick them from a list; you get affection points with them if you're right, but they get mad at you if you're wrong. I played with the sound off, so they only ever got mad at me.

I randomly picked the game up on sale and later found it almost invisible on the internet, which is a shame.

Can it get improved: 200% yes
Did I enjoy it? Yes, I played it 3-4 times (a few years intervals)
Should you pick it up in 2024 and play it? If you are ok playing games with old/bad graphics YES, else no.

The three key parts that made me replay the game:

The story/lore: 9.2/10
The Story revolves around a dying world, and you have a magical book that can change the world's attributes. This book helps you in both combat, helping other characters, and, contributes to the story as you shape the attributes of another world. The story progression feels quite realistic (for being inside a fantasy world) and not forced in any way. The world also contains certain mysteries that make the world feel more alive.

The combat system: 5.2/10
The combat was a bit repetitive, however, I did not experience that as they featured some variations of combat styles, the battles were short, and had a good balance of story & character interaction and battles. If your main drive of playing is for pure combat then this game is not for you.

Character & character interactions: 10/10
Every single NPC was unique in both animation & personality. They were connected to the MC or story and made the world feel alive. One big part was that after some time in the game, you could make one character your lover, and oh boy do I think they nailed the gameplay surrounding it. Even today (2024) there are extremely few games i think have had better character & character interaction then this game.

In conclusion:
I give the game a 5/5, however more objectively if played for the first time in 2024 it should get 3.75/5. (mostly due to graphics & combat not aging well)

i see so many people saying this could've been so much more and i can't help but agree.
i love this game but it's hard to go back to because of the gameplay mechanics.
art is 10000000/10 to me tho

Could've been better, could've been much better. Decent for what it was, it's worth playing for the neat story, the dating sim stuff, the great art, and the nice music.

This game could've been so good if it was good. It has so much potential and then completely flubs the execution at every step.

Beautiful, unique and charming. Repetitive, not well executed and overstays its welcome heavily.
