Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (also known as Batman of the Future: Return of the Joker in Europe and Australia) is a 2000 American direct-to-video animated film featuring the comic book superhero Batman and his archenemy, the Joker. It is set in the continuity of the animated series Batman Beyond, in which Bruce Wayne has retired from crime fighting, giving the mantle of Batman to high school student Terry McGinnis, and serves as a sequel to both Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures. As in the TV series, Will Friedle and Kevin Conroy star as Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne, respectively. Mark Hamill, who played the Joker opposite Conroy in Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures, reprises his role.

Where do I begin? The movie itself is fucking fantastic! Great voice acting with Mark Hammel returning as the Joker, set in the universe where the new Batman is Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne was forced to retire due to his age and failing health, though Terry suspects that it's more than this as he knows Batman wouldn't let something as minor as a health issue stop him!
This game takes the story from the movie with the Joker, one of the only villains Terry knows so little about and both Bruce Wayne and Barbra Gordon don't want to talk about it, however, things end up surfacing back up with the joker and they can't bury their heads in the sand anymore.
The gameplay is reminiscent of a side-scrolling fighting game, however being 3D brought with it a bunch of problems, not to mention the enemy rarely falls over, unlike say, Streets of Rage or, a game that's also 3D, The Bouncer for the PS2. This adds a difficulty not needed as they can punch through your attacks and quite often you see the exact enemy come up to replace the previous one which gets repetitive, but not in a good way.
I really wanted to give this game the benefit of the doubt, but it's really bad. It's a shame because the universe is ripe for gameplay! I even sent a long-ass email to WB and suggested that they did a game where you play as Terry in super high-tech Gotham. Considering the large map in the last game and how they were able to incorporate so many different villains I'd love to see this be a thing! Sadly, however, that probably won't be the case. I get the feeling the series is fairly niche and wouldn't be taken on unless developers were free to do what they like and not chained by mandates and what corporate wanted, which may be what happened with this game too. Real shame.
