Part 4: Metafight EX for Game Boy Color

Here we start the filler episode of these reviews for the series. Normally there isn't a filler thing for these review series I do but I have to make an exception here. This won't be a deep dive like other reviews I'll be doing for this. Why? Well let me explain this game.

This is not a Blaster Master game despite the title on Backloggd. This is a sequel to Bomber King on the Famicom called Bomber King: Scenario 2. That was meant to be the sequel to Bomberman on the Famicom. It's very complicated and really hard to explain. For some reason they decided to rename this game in the US and PAL regions because I guess the character looked enough like Kane/Jason from the Famicom game. Despite Sunsoft's name on this one, the game was developed by Aicom.

Bomber King: Scenario 2 is very similar to that original game where your job is to destroy blocks with your bombs and find the key to leave. You have many items you can find and if you thought the best thing about Bomberman was breaking soft blocks, well this game is for you! This game is also a lot easier than the original Famicom game.

The game does drag a bit with 9 periods all together with a varying amount of levels. It's difficulty is surprisingly not too hard which is odd considering the original game was brutally difficult from what I read. The bosses will probably be the most challenge you'll get in this one. Though I do wish this game didn't have instant death in some areas.

The game does look nice for the Game Boy and they even got this cool wavy effect when time is over. The bosses are also impressive in size. The music is oddly the same from the Famicom game and oh you better love it because the level theme is the exact same for every single level. It totally doesn't get annoying. They don't even show the lyrics for it in this game AND THERE'S NO KARAOKE CONTEST THIS TIME! How will I live with this??

This is a fine Game Boy game but I don't see many caring or even wanting to play this one nowadays. You could do worse but I also think it's too repetitive to be anything amazing. If you're trying to play Blaster Master games, just skip this one as it won't really appeal to you as it was never meant to be one. Next time will be the next game that is actually a Blaster Master game. Blaster Master 2 for the Sega Genesis, the one I'm going to dread playing...

Thirtieth GOTW finished for 2023. Absolutely felt like a Bomberman knockoff. Use of items was not explained nor indicated in the least. While it was easy enough to identify which blocks could be bombed, it didn't really feel like any of the levels were very creative. More often than not, it was just traps and dangers that you didn't know how to tackle due to aforementioned lack of item explanation, or even worse, it was a completely dark room. Some of the bosses were straight-up awful, either due to painfully unforgiving mechanics, phantom hit boxes, or being damage sponges. It had the heart of a Bomberman game, but none of the soul.

You could have just told me it was a Bomberman game. I mean what would you rather play, "a Bomberman spinoff," or "Blaster Master but without your car"
