Constantine

released on Feb 14, 2005

The game is played in third person perspective, switching to first person when the hero enters narrow spaces. Constantine's goal is to discover how and why Demons have managed to physically enter Earth, although the ancient laws forbid it. He utilizes a number of holy weapons and artifacts, from twin revolvers (dubbed the Witch's Curse) that shoot stones from the Holy Lands to Holy Water Bombs and the Cross Shotgun. Constantine can also utilize various kinds of offensive magic powered by the souls of slain demons. Often he will be obliged to travel to Hell, which resembles a perpetually ablaze and decaying version of our world, in order to bypass obstacles. Each level is linear and is played sequentially, following most of the story of the movie with a few sections added in or stretched out to allow for more action.

This game has some of the worst controls a tie-in PS2 era game could muster. It wanted to feel like Devil May Cry and Max Payne and what it got instead was the feel of wearing a pair of pants full of shit. Your moveset has this absolute dealbreaker of a 180 turn when you flick the right thumbstick down. Since right thumbstick ALSO is the camera, you will be doing one thing and accidentally do completely different move that will fuck you in every combat situation.

It runs like shit, combat has nothing going for it, and the level design is awful.

The overall vibe of mid 00's cheese is pretty good though. Edgy and overimportant coolness. It's bad but it's so good.

You know what, for a mid 2000s movie tie-in game, not absolutely terrible. I enjoyed it a bit as a kid all things considered

Surprisingly good for what it is.

Constantine is the least ambitious and most presentable of the three 21st century home console games from Bits Studios (the others being Die Hard: Vendetta and Rogue Ops). Mechanically it's about as average as you can possibly imagine, but there are some fun touches, like the portrayal of Hell as a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles and a powerful nail gun with ammo that can be picked up and used repeatedly. Appropriately tongue-in-cheek dialogue and voice acting keep the simplistic urban fantasy narrative interesting, and to the game's credit it doesn't overstay its welcome.
