Desert Demolition Starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote

released on Dec 31, 1995

Play either the Road Runner OR Wile E. Coyote in this unique side-scroller that is just like an interactive Saturday morning cartoon. Your goal: run through six different desert environments before time expires, collecting ACME stamps. As the Road Runner, speed is your ally as you do incredible jumps, burn though loop-de-loops, and avoid all of the Coyote's contraptions and ambushes. The Road Runner can also scare an unsuspecting Coyote with his Beep-Beep attack. As the Coyote, you use Acme's crazy gadgets to catch the Road Runner, constantly attempting to master their power without getting yourself flattened. The Coyote has a special leap attack which allows him to make a last ditch attempt to grab the bird!

Hey this one's alright if you have twenty minutes to kill

You can play as both the villain and the hero, which was an enormous moral circumstance to have when me was a baby goblin

This one was probably my favorite Looney Tunes game from the 16-bit era aside from B-Ball maybe, unlike Death Valley Rally on the SNES you can play as both Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote!

Road Runner is more or less Sonic the Hedgehog, but Coyote is by far the more interesting and fun character to play as. He's slower than Road Runner obviously, but he can pick up a ton of gadgets like spring shoes, rocketskates, the green bat costume, etc. He also gets back his health by eating jars of pills instead of bird seed, which I guess makes sense since he's probably an addict. It's also just nice beating the game with him and seeing him get some kind of recognition even if it's only a trophy, meanwhile he literally commits suicide in the Road Runner ending. oofa.

The most notable thing about this game which made it memorable for me though is the music with synchronizes with your actions. Stand still? Nothing. Walking? Slow doot doot doos. Dashing? Upbeat drumming. Trying to do a balancing act with your wheeled headgear? Drumroll, etc, etc. Just absolutely fantastic sound design. It doesn't seem like much, but sometimes it's the little things that count in the long run.

Desert Demolition does however suffer a bit of "Stimpy's Invention" syndrome, in that it can be beaten in 15 minutes. But again, it's a fun 15 minutes and I ended up wasting an hour playing through this three times, twice with Road Runner and once with Coyote. I actually thought about speedrunning this game at one point due to its length and how fun it was to try and run through the levels even as Coyote. I still just don't have the commitment for it though.

The level design isn't winning any awards, but it's always a fun romp to pick up now and then.

Playing as the Road Runner's a pretty good Sonic-esque time. Playing as Wile. E is a dreadful slog. Appreciate the attempt tho.
