I expected this punching bag of a failed reboot to be really bad. And honestly, it’s pretty good? At least for the most part. This might be the biggest example of “x game is good but it’s not a x game.” This game is quality, but it’s not a Devil May Cry game. I think if the title was different people would love this game.

First of all, the gameplay is really good. The changes in mechanics take a bit to get used to, but everything flows pretty well and the combat is enjoyable. I will say it’s a bit on the easy side in terms of difficulty, and the mechanics are not at all complicated, which isn’t really what I want from a DMC game, but it’s still good. Secondly, the level design is great, with solid platforming, and very interesting world design and art style. There was clearly a lot of effort and soul put into this game, and I appreciate that.

Sadly, this is a reboot, and the worst part about this game by far is the tone. Devil May Cry should never take itself too seriously (look at Dmc2). I mean, watch the Dmc3 opening cutscene, it’s cool but also silly. Dante doesn’t take anything seriously. But here, Donte is so overly edgy, constantly swearing in our faces and getting laid as a hobby, with big bold letters showing up in the levels saying "KILL DANTE" it’s LAME and so forced. Donte’s design is also generic, nothing offensive, just not Dante. Vergil is just lame and weak in this game, and his “twist” villain ending feels pretty forced too. The story is alright, not bad, but it’s so overly serious and Donte is so edgy that I understand why people hate this game. Also thanks for this Definitive Edition so Vergil doesn’t have that horrid fedora.

This game is good, with great gameplay and levels, but sadly it’s hard to ignore that this is a failed reboot with overly edgy and serious replacements for two of the best characters in video games. The best part of this game is probably that Capcom realized how much people care about Dmc, hence why Devil May Cry 5 even exists. Still, I enjoyed my experience, it's kind of inoffensive since this reboot didn't go anywhere, and I don't know if that helps or hurts it.

Replaying this game was hella fun since i sadly lost my freak with normal DMC n shit so I needed someway to get my fix and this game was as close as I could get for it and it didn't dissapoint gameplay wise still goated AF like why this game he only DMC game to have a scythe man AND I CAN MAKE IT A FUCKING BONE SCYTHE like completely forgot about that and I forgot I can do that one spinny move like with it like my fav move with rebellion in dmc5 like cmon bro but yeah honestly in terms of how much i used them and just overall enjoyment I have to say this is my fav in all the dmc games like I never forced myself to use them like i did with for example Lucifer in dmc4 lile how tf i combo with that shit ong but yeah story still hot ass but it has alot or actual good moments no one's care to mention which tbh i dont blame em like how when vergil explains their past and the graffiti which ironically amazing btw I spent hella long in the extras menu just looking at it but ueah the way it matches what the conversation is about is so cool like I want that shit in my veins or how during that one puzzle mission with like the shit you have to stomp Dante ask vergil how he coped with their mom's death and he yaps om about how he started his rebel group and got good at hacking and all this other shit and dnate just repsonds with oh thats cool i just went with alcohol and women for my coping and just the way he delivered his line with awkward sincerity which the Dante at the start of the game would never do is a 10/10 character moment which naturally shows his growth from the start of the game in way that the game never matches ever again like it sucks man like this game would have an at the very least an OKAY story if they didn't have vergil turn evil man i hate it so much why tf did he kill a unborn baby i fucking hate it like even that scene where vergil says he has a bigger dick isn't terrible since its basically supposed to show how he's warming up to dantes humor n shit again decently natural even if its immature and stupid but like im just grasping at straws here man I don't wanna have a completely negative view on this game since I genuinely love it and unfortunately find the edginess unironically cool since like i mentioned in my original review i grew uo with a edgy older brother so like yeah self explanatory why edgy shit has a soft spot in my heart but yeah fun game glad i replayed it 9/10 sorry not sorry

Fun gameplay, nice art style, amazing music, horrible story. Overall bad DMC but it's good to pass the time, even if you gotta play it with your brain off.
