Dr. Chaos

released on Jun 19, 1987

The player assumes the role of Michael Chaos, brother of mad physicist Dr. Ginn Chaos, who has been doing Warp Zone experiments in his mansion and gone missing. Armed with only a Knife in the beginning, as Michael moves through the house, he can pick up Handgun Bullets, Machine Gun Bullets, Grenades and life-replenishing Yellow Vitamins and Red Vitamins. There is a menu which has four options, open, get, go, and hit. There are 11 Warp Zones in all. At the end of each of the first 10 Warp Zones, Michael must fight a large monster that carries a piece of the Laser and guards a valuable piece of equipment, the latter consisting of the Ultra Space Sensor, four Life Bottles, the Air Helmet, the Jump Boots, two Blue Vitamins and the Shield Suit. Once Michael fully assembles the Laser, he'll be able to challenge the final boss, Canbarian.

It experiments with a few unique gameplay ideas, but I don't think they pan out very well. The first person sections are just dull and don't really add anything of value. I get trying to add a sense of exploring the mansion, but it just didn't work well. The action platforming itself is serviceable, and the premise is cool, but ultimately too clunky as a whole.

Also, I think Michael's brother is a prepper. What sort of lunatic has dozens of grenades and weapons stashed in their house?

Full disclosure: I have nostalgia-goggles for this.

Early-era sidescrolling that switches in to NSEW 1st person room searching for portals in to other worlds where you're back in side scrolling. The mechanics of this game are rough but the tone is wonderful 80's camp and it awoke something inside me as a kid. Intro'd me to a lot of horror cliches (zombies, flying skulls, body horror).

If you don't play it, at least take a look thru the spritesheets for some sensible chuckles.
