Took me several searches to find it as I somehow kept forgetting the game's name but despite that I actually like this one for the most part even if it still has its hiccups. Probably the best SMS game I've played so far. Still below my 3.5 average score as time of writing which isn't a good omen, but only slightly this time.

The gimmick with this game is that you can shoot in all directions, but you cannot change your aim and move at the same time. It's a careful balancing act, one that really requires you to pay attention to your surroundings. In later levels things move faster and you can get smacked pretty easily, but once you know it you know it. There being no lives and if you get smacked it's game over and back to the start is really bad by its own merits, but the game's difficulty is generally lower to compensate. Your goal is to defend the globe, so you can't let most enemy types leave the screen once they appear, or the globe will take damage. You can heal it off and the earth has a lot of hits though, so you're never in too much of a pickle there and should focus on yourself who doesn't have that luxury.

The game's divided into Offense and Defense, but the bulk of the game is on its Offensive side, where you do everything that I just described. Defense is more of a shooting gallery, where you defend the glode and your starting health is what you ended the Offensive phase on. Most of the time these are too short to be a threat but levels 6 and 10 are really brutal, spawning them across the screen, very close to the globe, it feels unfair to force game overs but if you're skilled enough you can still beat it.

While not the best in its genre by any meants, the game was enough to keep my interest and I know I'll remember World Defenders for years to come.

This is a pretty fun early space shooter, and once you get used to the strange controls, it's pretty simple and easy to pick up and play. I enjoy games that are like that, but the problem with simplicity in this case is that it can start to drag on and get boring after a while, since you're repeating the same 2 repetitive level structures throughout the whole thing. Still, I quite like this one. It certainly stands out, compared to the other shooters on the Master System. It's simple fun, and definitely worth picking up if you ever find it.
