Godzilla: Kaijuu no Daishingeki is a turn based strategy game, with some arcade elements. A player can play as Godzilla or similar monsters (kaiju), like Anguirus, and Fire Rodan. Should players want to support humanity they can play as the G-Force, a human defense force. Humans have monster killing tools such as, tanks, artillery and planes. Some monsters are unplayable enemies and both sides will have the chance to fight against them. On the map, the game is a typical war strategy. The player can move units on the map, and attack enemies. Battles have their own screen and animations. The fighting is quite arcade-like and simple, functioning similarly to fighting games. When all units have used their actions points a turn ends. Godzilla: Kaijuu no Daishingeki has four maps, and an extra secret level. The title was never officially released outside of Japan, but fan translator TheMajinZenki released an unofficial English version of the game on January 2, 2019, under the name Godzilla: Monsters Attack.

Honestly kinda cool! It's kind of a progression on what Godzilla 2 was doing, with some more going on with how battles work. Monsters will fight each other as well as you, and when you encounter monsters you get a little shooter minigame to try and shave some damage off of them. You can also play AS the monsters, which I imagine involves jumping on JSDF guys and having a much easier time. Still a pretty tedious game though! I found it really charming despite everything (helped by the fact that I played a lot worse Godzilla shit right before this) and honestly if I found the drive, I think it could eventually become fun to see it through. I dunno, feelin warm on this one!

it’s way fucking hard at first but hey at least i can play as godzilla!

I love tactical games, and I love moving little guys around on a grid. Heck, eagle-eyed readers of my Backloggd will know that Shining Force 2 is my favorite ever game! Not to mention my love of the X-Com series, Fire Emblem and all of that stuff.

That's a long way to go to say that this game should be right up my alley.

And it is! It's charming and the art is so cute but it falls into the pretty sad trap of just being a bit of a slog.

I played through the full Godzilla campaign and the first three missions of the G-Force campaign (each has 4 missions) and I don't think I would have gotten through it if I couldn't kinda zone out while watching SGDQ 2022.

I think my biggest thing that kinda made me yawn was impact. Each combat has a little mini-game where you shoot at one another, and as the G-Force you're lobbing projectiles and there's not any tactile impact or any sensation that you're doing good. Also goodness I know they're giant monsters but the health of the monsters goes down SO SLOWLY! It makes it incredibly tedious.

There is fun to be had in the little mini-game though, I think people who are very into pattern recognition and bosses would have a good time.
