Hakuoki Kyoto Wins was one of the otome games that started me in this genre, and now finishing it I can understand why that was the case. The problem though with this game is it had a quantity over quality a bit. This game has 13 different routes (12 guys + a normal route), and for an otome game that is a bit overkill. For the first couple of routes I did it felt worth it but as you get to the other routes it just a lot of skipping the first chapters while seeing the new scenes for that route, and it just got a bit too much. The nice thing is repeat playthrough of the other routes takes about I say 4-5 hours due to repeated sections. Though minding that, I enjoyed my time with this game and I can’t wait to play the second half of the series within the next couple of months.

In my personal opinion, Hakuoki is one of the best introductory games to the Otome Genre! ♡

Pros:
✓ The story and world-building is fantastic! Even though there are (obviously) some crazy parts that are NOT realistic to 1864 Japan, a lot of the plot draws inspiration from this time period and actual real members of the Shinsengumi (such as Hijikata Toshizo).
✓ Voice acting is phenomenal across the board! Each character has unique distinct voices that do well to showcase their personalities.
✓ The Romance is subtle enough in this game where I could honestly even recommend it for people looking for a good visual novel who aren't necessarily into the Otome Genre. Romance is not the forefront of this game in my opinion, it lends itself far more to its role as an entertaining historical drama.
✓ The variety of Love Interests always astounds me. After playing many Otome Games where you get at most 4-5 romanceable characters, this game is refreshing in the sheer amount of routes it offers. (More on this later, though).
✓ The soundtrack is beautiful and the background music goes along perfectly with different parts of the plot.
✓ The art is beautiful, and even though I'm not a "completionist" when it comes to Otome games, the CGs were so well drawn it made me want to get all of them for each character.

Cons:
✕ The first 2-3 chapters of each character is incredibly repetitive. Even though I spaced out the routes over a span of a few months, I had to skip through a LOT of repetitive reading before things diverged enough to get interesting.
✕ So, remember I said I appreciated the breadth of love interests available?... Right. Well, initially I bought the game after seeing an image of Takeda and Miki. So imagine my surprise when I realized BOTH of them were non-romanceable! Don't get me wrong I love all the other guys lol, but come on! At least give me a Trashy Takeda routeeee.
✕ This is not necessarily a con, but do beware it's really easy to get things wrong in this game. Perhaps I had really bad luck, but I pretty much always got bad endings. I definitely needed a guide to even get onto a route, so just keep that in mind when playing. I ain't patient enough to suffer through more bad routes before finding my way around the dudes.

I'm still in progress with this game, but here are the routes I've completed up until now.

❥ Iba (I played him for maximum Takeda exposure, and I stayed for both lmfao. He grew on me, my favorite LI thus far!)
❥ Souji (What's not to love about him?)
❥ Hijikata (VERY plot-forward. The romance was extremely subtle).
