In the year 2998, humanity has finally reached the stars, and was able to build a prosperous, peaceful society. However, a space matter known as the Black Nebula began to spread, threatening to engulf the galaxies controlled by humans. It turned out that a robotic dictator named Super Mech was behind this occurrence. The Earth sends Captain Lancer, a skillful pilot navigating the powerful CNCS1 aircraft, equipped with the most powerful weapon: the Hellfire... This is a horizontal space shooter, with the traditional premise of a lone pilot traversing hostile areas and out-manoeuvring and/or destroying quick and numerous enemies.

I think the swappable angle of fire here is more of a gimmick than some revolution in gameplay, but at least they tried something new.

Kudos to Toaplan for trying to do something different when stepping into the new Hori territory - there weren't a lot of shmups doing the multi-angle weapon system while incorporating such strict and methodical levels around it. But even with that hook, I found this mostly monotonous. If I have to wrangle around multiple weapons like this, I'd rather have a suite of super-dramatic ballistics like Thunder Force instead of a straight line laser.

That said, I like how stinky the game feels. This game is ugly but in like, a very campy and endearing way. Especially the music, and even moreso in the Genesis port. What compels a man to make sounds like this.

This game is my favorite Genesis shmup.
Why? Because it’s fun, and I enjoy the music.
It’s actually an improvement over the arcade version, which is odd for a Genesis game.
The Hellfire weapon you launch doesn’t exist in the arcade version, and the ship doesn’t change color to indicate what firing pattern you are on in the arcade game. Which can be frustrating sometimes.
This was the only Genesis shmup I ever had. It came with the Genesis I bought.
It’s no Super R-Type or Lifeforce, but it’s fun in its own right.
Don’t let these people tell you it sucks.
Learn it sucks for yourself…or maybe you’ll like it too.

The spaceship having a sprite with a rotating exterior is a cheap trick but man it works on me. Otherwise this is overly difficult and underly interesting.

I kinda like this shot-switching shmup, but as others have mentioned, having to switch shot-type in a particular order is a real nuisance.
