HyperZone

released on Aug 31, 1991

Hyper Zone plays like a cross between a racing game and shooter. The object of the game is to navigate each level while shooting enemies and earning points, until finally an encounter with a boss ends each level. After enough points are acquired, the player earns an "extend" and his or her ship is upgraded in the next stage. The player's ship can receive up to six upgrades.

"Imagine F-Zero but if it were a rail shooter," I say while having little to no experience with F-Zero or rail shooters.

HyperZone is pretty neat. There's not really much to it beyond just playing through the handful of stages it offers but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Has some cool graphics and music though. Can never go wrong with a Jun Ishikawa soundtrack.

I also admittedly did have some trouble with judging my position in comparison to incoming hazards and projectiles. Didn't ever get much further than the third level. Although I'm not entirely sure if that's an actual problem with the game or if I just have the dreaded "skill issue." Always possible it's just both.

Neat little tech demo in the form of a shoot-em-up. Definitely a product of it's time but still cool and I enjoyed my time with it. Jun Ishikawa never misses with the soundtracks

I call this the Thunder Blade Strat: go in a square or whatever rectangular shape is available on your track and shit will Never hit you. It's even more effective here than in Super Thunder Blade, it works wonders on every boss! Anyway, you'd think comparing it to that first off is a very bad sign, but it runs much better because of Mode 7 and is honestly more like Space Harrier anyways with a dash of F-Zero. It's pretty cool for a while, kind of becomes goofy and trivial after figuring out the trick though.

When the road suddenly comes to a dead end in stage 7 I felt my soul leaving my body.
