octopus boss makes this Nintendo Hard
What a weird port of this game. While I may be one of the few people who don't mind the Mega Drive port of this game that doesn't have nostalgia for it, this one is just sloppy and questionable. This came after the Mega Drive version, all this is doing is showing how outdated the Famicom was by this point. Even with it being really unpolished it's crazy just what they changed to this one.
First off the graphics have been massively compromised for the hardware and only the big sprites of the bosses have remained and even then they are no where near as detailed as before. The music has also been downgraded but it's still good for what it is so don't take that as an insult.
You may have noticed already on the picture used for this site that there are new forms. This game uses new forms and stages to give the game more content. While that may sound good the problem is that this game never had much depth to begin with so it having more makes the game feel more repetitive. They also just feel like mixes of the existing forms outside of the shark because yes remember when we went to the freaking ocean! How does he even breathe??? They couldn't do the dragon or bear right in this port since the dragon doesn't even have bolts fly out of him and the bear doesn't even turn enemies into stone.
The game's hitboxes are awful, you will get so many times from bad hit detection and IDK if this was the fault of the fan translation (why does this even have one?) but sometimes the sprite glitched up when I got hit for a frame. Also for some reason bosses just now hurt you when you get hit, was this a thing in the Arcade? If not then what the heck.
I'm honestly surprised looking at youtube comments and seeing people act like this was better then the Mega Drive one like I usually can respect opinions and such or at least try to. (I apologize if I don't) but I really don't get it here, I honestly feel like maybe I'm being too harsh but there was no room for ports like this anymore. Maybe give it a shot if you're interested but if you didn't like Juuouki in other versions, this won't change your mind.
