Great visuals, decent sound, but some sluggish movement and gameplay keep it from being the Samurai themed Castlevania it could have been.

The atmosphere of this game is quite grim and convincing. But golly gee, it'd be nice to continue without a cheat code. It's no Castlevania, but it is unique.

TL;DR - This game is surprisingly deep for an 8-bit title.

It's cool that the game is a little bit non-linear. Every level is a providence of Japan, and each time you beat a level, you can choose to go to one of the surrounding providences. You can even go back to previous ones if you so choose.

You can go straight to the end goal, Edo, but you probably won't be powered up enough to beat it. Since some levels have bosses that give you a new ability. There's also dojo levels that will give you better defenses if you can beat them.

I'm not a huge fan of the momentum/inertia of the jumps, but the level design works with it rather than against it. The enemy spawns aren't too aggressive or spammy, though they can cheap shot you sometimes. I can say I like how few bottomless pits there are in this.

I am genuinely shocked at how ambitious this game is. I only got through it by using save states as checkpoints at the start of levels. I can't imagine how long it'd take to beat naturally.

I can definitely see how this would a kid's favorite game in the 80s/90s

A 'pick your safepoint and swing' kinda Castlevania-y thing. The art and gameplay is tight, and I like that there's optional alternate routes to take for upgrades. Kinda fucked myself over by not taking them, though, and I could only beat the final boss by state-calculating a bunch of damage boosts. Not Cool.

Just okay. Notably neat for Master System, but kinda samey and low-budget compared to its NES and PCE contemporaries. We really were scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Buen juego de plataformas, lo recomiendo a pesar de su alta dificultad (hablamos de un juego de los 80s xd). Además de ser una joya oculta dentro del catalogo de la Master System.

This is a must-have for the Master System. It's a great little action platformer that while not unique, is really fun to play, and hard to put down. Ever since I've 1st played this, I've beaten it at least once every year. Seriously, check this one out. It's one of my personal favorite 8-bit games, even if it is very simple. The controls and graphics are amazing for the Master System. You'd think it was an early arcade game.
