very fun game, though i wish there were more... well, speed to it. the endgame really does feel like a bit of a slog, especially completing challenges. but it was fun, either way

Magic Research is a fine idle game.

It knows how to use idle game mechanics to make progression satisfying, with resets bringing great improvements to your production and stats. The combat system makes it require a bit more active play that most idle games to progress.

The game has more story than most idle game, but the story just isn't really interesting. It also doesn't handle the reset mechanic really well; new character will acknowledge that they are inheriting stuff from the previous ones, but will still redo all the main story events the exact same way. Many of the events feel like they were only written as a formality, with a bunch of them (the "mastery" events) being straight up copy pasted.

Most of the challenge runs that you unlock after beating the game unfortunately only really force you to change how you fight one or two bosses a little bit, leaving you just doing the same thing again for the rest of the game.

Overall a satisfying game, but that really starts to feel samey after some time.

In a sea of crappy mobile incremental games, Magic Research stands out because it costs money and it's finite. It's not as short as Universal Paperclips or Spaceplan, so it does give days worth of content, but it still has a defined ending!

There's quite a lot of content to unlock, and there's a nice milestone system that lets you unlock major bonuses (that are more than number go up 1% faster) for future runs after meeting certain criteria and triggering special events. Once the unlocks start to slow down from organic discover you unlock the ability to see how other unlocks can be... unlocked, which both tells you that you're nowhere near the end and gives you something to work towards.

There is more active play in this game than most idle games since progression is tied to combat and there will be a bit of manual combat early and mid game. Gameplay is more important than narrative in this game, but overall it's a great incremental and well worth the price.
