Nexzr

released on Dec 31, 1992

Nexzr is a vertically scrolling shoot-em-up similar to Super Star Soldier. The player-controlled spaceship starts with a simple vulcan gun that can only shoot straight. Various power-ups can either enhance the strength of this gun, replace it with a laser weapon, or add a secondary weapon (homing fire, thin spreading laser attacks, etc.), which is activated automatically. Mid- and end-level bosses are encountered on nearly every stage. Additional lives can be collected, but the player always restarts from the beginning of the stage when his fighter craft is destroyed.

Vertical shoot em up. One of the best shooters that I've played that has such a basic style to its gameplay. All you have is a button to shoot, no bombs, specials, speed changes, or advanced scoring mechanics. You can pick up powerups to turn your main shot into a spread shot or more powerful straight shot and can pick up secondary weapons including a wider secondary spread shot, homing laser, or the most interesting being two smaller ships that chase after enemies and obstacles. Great music, nice opening and ending cutscenes, varied level design.

I saw this game ranked as a S tier shmup on the PC Engine and had to see what it was like. I saw the Kaneko logo at the title screen and was a little worried because they also had their name on Super Star Soldier and I was very unimpressed with that one. This game is better than that one though I don't fully get the hype for this game.

Now don't get me wrong, this is a good shmup almost very good actually but I don't really see what makes it so amazing. The music is pretty good at least and I like the animated cutscenes even if they're very little of them. I like how the game isn't too long but it can be pretty hard. I eventually stuck with using the two helper ships for power ups because they seem to be the best imo.

If there are more compliments to give, I don't really think there's anything really awful about the game, the stages work and the bosses can be fun. I do wish the laser sound for one of the weapons didn't sound so obnoxious though. This is more of a me issue but I find most of the designs in this game really boring and for some reason it disappoints me even if the game does look good for the console.

Nexzr is a game you'll probably find enjoyment in, even more then I did probably. I just wish I liked it more but it is what it is. It seems to be pretty niche here in the States so maybe give it some attention sometime if you're looking for more shmups to try out.
