this game is utter mid 2000s license game slop. the game is not fun to play at all. the top down segments are bland. cooking minigame is fine i guess idk. i will be playing all 5 ratatouille games.

Asobo's Ratatouille is honestly one of the best licensed games I know. Can this portable version match the quality of it's big brother? No, of course not, that's a stupid question. Portable versions are rarely as good or better than home console or PC counterparts. But it can try to be at least decent, right?

There are basically 3 gameplay modes in this game. Mostly you'll be platforming. Remy can double jump, walljump, climb stuff, crawl and run. For every platforming level, the goal is find an ingredient, then get to the goal, all while the clock is ticking, but the game is generous on timer refills and stoppers, and the timer itself is pretty lengthy. There are lots of hazards, but I never died from them no matter how many times I ran into them, and I ran into a lot of them. And they don't seem to deduct from the timer, they only stun you for a short time and apply a knockback. The levels are big, so you'll be exploring to find the ingredients, and maybe for bonuses, but the level design isn't engaging to keep me invested, and most you can find is cheese, every 100 pieces is extra life, extra lives themselves, stars to unlock bonus stuff from the menu and clock power-ups. Or Gusteau icon that changes Remy's icon on the status bar to Gusteau, and I have no idea what it really does. I haven't died a single time in this game, and the life counter caps at 15, so after I find an ingredient, I make a mad dash to the exit because there's no incentive to explore. Inside platforming sections you can enter top-down sections that are a little more puzzle oriented, with pretty basic puzzles and item usage, and you can find required ingredient in them as well, so you'll want to visit them, only to find out that it rewarded you with a 1-up instead of ingredient. Or green stars which are sort of for 100% completion. In top-down segments, the timer freezes and instead you have a health bar. You can run out of health! Except you don't lose a life and are just kicked out of that section, and you can re-enter again. After you exit the top-down segment, all bonuses reset, which means the clock power-ups are also back which means you're unlikely to run out of time.

After you've beaten all platforming stages, you have a cooking mini-game where you drop ingredients into dishes, and watch out for their temperature to not burn them... which is what I did, because there's so much to keep track of. And I still managed to get 5 stars in each of these. The mini-game is alright, but it doesn't hold a candle to the variety found in Asobo's Ratatouille.

The graphics are pretty decent, they went for a cartoony visuals, which I think looks similar to one of the Ratatouille shorts, "Your Friend the Rat", but maybe I'm misremembering. Regardless, they look somewhat unique, and I like how status bar Remy reacts to you getting bonuses or getting stunned by a trap, I thought that was cute. The music is pretty decent too. I suck at explaining music, all I can really say is if it's decent, alright or composed by Shin'en, which in this case, it isn't, but the instrumentation sounds distinctly... French, and the compositions are lengthy.

The game as a whole is not very engaging. Every chapter you have same themed levels all with the same goal and a cooking mini-game at the end, there's no gimmicks or variety. And while it's still not the worst thing ever, it's still pretty mediocre. Check out Asobo's Ratatouille if you want a definitive Ratatouille video game experience.
