VVVVVV reminded me of this old favorite from Newgrounds, so I bought the itch.io rerelease and honestly I still like this just about the same as before. It gradually comes apart at the seams as you progress, and sooner or later it falls into utter cacophany. There is no lore reason for this, which I quite like honestly. Sometimes things just happen because people go "wouldn't it be funny if" etc etc.

This is still free to play on Newgrounds (providing the Ruffle emulator they use now actually consistently works) but you can also support the dev by paying just $5 or so to download it onto your computer. Nobody seems to know about it anymore. If you like VVVVVV or Metroid it's definitely worth a look. Feels like a fucked up (but less difficult) lovechild between the two.
