An expansion for Rome: Total War

The second expansion for Rome: Total War, Alexander is set much earlier time period than the original game, beginning in 336 BC. The expansion plays much the same as the original game but with a new map, fewer factions and different units. The player takes on the role of Alexander the Great during his thirteen-year reign, beginning with his ascension to the Macedonian throne. The game allows Alexander to live longer than the 33 years of his actual life and the campaign’s completion depends on the player conquering 30 provinces within the 100-turn limit.

What I hate about early Total War games is the inability to play past the final date. I'm the type of player who likes to build a solid foundation before expanding, and this game totally does not provide opportunities for that. It's like playing with a timer.

On top of that, this particular expansion has only one playable faction, which is very limiting. I'd also like to see the map expanded. Just because Alexander never ventured West or North doesn't mean the player shouldn't be allowed to.

I will say the core battling gameplay here is probably the best in the series, but everything else has been improved upon in the sequels.

In conclusion, I think this expansion is ONLY worth playing for the historical role-playing purpose. As an actual game it has no advantages over the original Rome: Total War, especially considering the modability of the latter.
